For as long as I can remember, baseball has always been an important part of my life. Using the symbol of the baseball bat as a physical impetus, I set about creating a project comprised of 15 baseball bats entitled America’s Pastime. Each bat has been hand turned on a wood lathe to the size and measurements of the original Louisville Slugger I owned and used as a kid. The overall series is categorized into three groups: Campers, Trucks and Strippers, and each group is inlayed with specific coded patterns using a variety of different wood species. Some of the inlay designs refer to a personal memory in my life while others look towards collective associations with brands or types. America’s Pastime: Campers, Trucks and Strippers is an investigation in both the exploratory and often exploited fascinations of entertainment, history and culture in America.
